B. The Scale of the House
The growing desire for more space has meant houses have become larger – in all the wrong places – at the expense of open spaces and a relationship to site. This project defers to tree canopy as a connector between housing and suburb. Through a repeatable and prefabricated module, this project builds a two-storey house for the cost of a one-storey house, increasing density while reducing footprint and impact on existing landscape.
The design retains an important piece of utilitarian heritage, but changes it to become a valuable and desirable setting for modern family life. The additions have transformed the way the owners live on the lot, whilst retaining the character that initially attracted them to it.
