F. Future Maidos

Future Maidos is a design for the future, not today. Projecting to 2070, the scenario will be quite different. Autonomous cars and ride-sharing will be commonplace; there may be no reliable or affordable central services; there might be universal basic income and a 20-hour working week; and there may be a warmer and drier climate in Ashfield.

Future Maidos achieves self-sufficiency in power, water and food. It is naturally cooled, lit and ventilated, and is planned for future adaptation. Community connectivity and local sharing, and increased tree and landscape cover, are incorporated. With a plot ratio of 1 on a 2,195 square-metre site, 28 new houses are created – an effective density of R128, with 40 square metres of productive garden per household. The self-sufficiency infrastructure will be paid for by 50 years of power, water, car, food and carbon maintenance savings.
